Detailed description
Black Flag: Henry Every, The Fancy 2023
Minted by the Perth Mint for 2023 in the finest 99.99% pure silver, the 1 Oz (31.1 g) silver investment coin is part of the Black Flag series, which is dedicated to the famous pirate ships. The motif of the fifth coin represents the frigate of the English pirate Henry Every, which became famous under the name of Fancy.
The reverse of the coin shows a view of the spacious deck of the Fancy. The frigate's bow carries cannons in a dense arrangement for a swift and devastating attack on pursuing vessels. The overflowing treasure chests of rich booty attest to the success of the strategy. The plundered vessel on the right struggles with her last breath on the ocean waves. Death and destruction are accompanied by the spectre of a skull over the horizon. The motif is complemented by the mint mark "P". The rim of the coin is completed with the inscriptions "FANCY", "BLACK FLAG: HENRY EVERY", weight and purity data and the symbols of pirates - a skull and crossbones.
Henry Every, sometimes nicknamed "Long Ben", plundered the Caribbean and Indian Ocean in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. To this day, he is considered a mysterious figure, with little known about his past before embarking on a career as a pirate. It is believed that he served as an officer in the British Royal Navy. One version of the story states that he and his companions took part in a mutiny on one of the empire's merchant or warships, and subsequently rebuilt the captured vessel for use in pirate expeditions. Other sources suggest that he acquired the ship by other legal or illegal means. The fact remains that the frigate Fancy became a legend in her day for her elegance, armament and, above all, speed. Under Captain Every's command, she eluded even the most determined pursuers and her uniqueness made her destined for the most famous event of the pirate's golden age.
In 1695, Every decided to attack a fleet of several Mughal merchant ships returning from Mecca to India. The unprecedented action brought him unimaginable wealth. The treasure, known as the "Pirate's Booty of the Mughal Empire," contained vast quantities of diamonds, gold, silver, religious artifacts and other valuables. What followed was a furious reaction from the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, as well as other countries around the world. They all demanded exemplary punishment for the captain and his crew. Avery became the first internationally wanted criminal and fat bounties were placed on his head. The pirate was never caught, however, and managed to disappear from the world with his treasure. His subsequent fate was never illuminated, but a small clue may be that some of the loot turned up on European markets. The audacity of Captain Every's act, however, was reflected in the tightening of measures to curb piracy and protect merchant shipping routes.
The obverse depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadly with the years of the monarch's reign '1952 - 2022' and the artist's initials. The rim of the coin shows the inscriptions "QUEEN ELIZABETH II", "TUVALU 1 DOLLAR", the year of issue and weight and fineness data.
The coin comes in a protective plastic capsule and is limited to only 15,000 pieces for the entire world!
