Detailed description
Black Flag: Black Bart, The Royal Fortune 2020
Minted by the Perth Mint in 2020 in purity of the purest 99.99% silver weighing 1 Oz (31.1 g), this silver investment coin is the second coin in the Black Flag series, dedicated to the famous pirate ships. The 2020 design features one of the ships christened Royal Fortune by the Welsh pirate Black Bart.
The coin depicts on its reverse the last Royal Fortune frigate on which the famous pirate was killed. His personal pirate flag flies on the main mast announcing the identity of the vessel and captain. The black flag depicts Black Bart and a skeleton together holding an hourglass. A ghostly skull rises from the ocean waves, symbolizing impending death. The motif is complemented by the mint mark "P". The rim of the coin is completed with the inscriptions "THE ROYAL FORTUNE, "BLACK FLAG: BLACK BART", data on the weight and purity of the metal and symbols of pirates - a skull and crossbones.
Bartholomew Roberts, nicknamed Black Bart, was born John Roberts in Wales. During his pirate career from 1719 to 1722, he raided 400 ships and is considered the most successful pirate of the so-called "Golden Age of Piracy".
He went to sea at the age of thirteen. In 1719 he was forced to join the pirates as a crew member of the raided ship Princess. He worked for their captain, Howell Davis, only reluctantly at first, but changed his mind after experiencing the new lavish lifestyle. He had excellent navigational skills and soon became the captain's confidant. When Davis died, he was elected his successor.
Black Bart and his crew raided vessels on the trade route between West Africa and America. He liked to use the name Fortune (Fortune, Good Fortune, Royal Fortune) for the captured ships. He even repeated the name Royal Fortune on four ships. On the last ship of that name he was hit by a bullet in the neck and died. This was during a collision with the British Royal Navy ship HMS Swallow in February 1722 off Cape Lopez in West Africa. The famous pirate was buried at sea by his crew during the battle, according to his wishes. This made it impossible for the British to retrieve his body. The ship Royal Fortune also found its doom here and was sunk and ended up at the bottom of the ocean.
The obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadly and the inscriptions "QUEEN ELIZABETH II", "TUVALU 1 DOLLAR", the year of issue and weight and fineness data.
The coin comes in a protective plastic capsule and is limited to a mintage of only 15,000 for the entire world!
