Detailed description
Black Flag: Blackbeards, Queen Anne's Revenge 2019
Minted by the Perth Mint in 2019 in the finest 99.99% pure silver, the 1 Oz (31.1 g) silver investment coin is the first coin in the new Black Flag series, dedicated to the famous pirate ships. The 2019 motif features the flagship of the English pirate Blackbeard, made famous as Queen Anne's Revenge.
The reverse of the coin depicts the famous frigate Queen Anne's Revenge with its sails shot through. A pirate flag flies on the main mast, announcing the identity of the vessel and its captain. The black flag bears the likeness of a horned skeleton, one hand stabbing a bleeding heart, the other hand raising a goblet and toasting the devil. The motif is complemented by the mint mark "P". The rim of the coin is completed with the inscriptions "QUEEN ANNE'S REVENGE", "BLACK FLAG: BLACKBEARD", information on the weight and purity of the metal and the symbols of pirates - a skull and crossbones.
Blackbeard is considered the most famous and feared pirate of all time. He became the scourge of the Caribbean and the North American colonies. He was born in Bristol, England, in 1680 as Edward Teach or Teache. He later served in the Royal Navy. His pirate career was short, lasting about two years, but he still managed to become a legend. He raided ships and robbed, took hostages and demanded ransoms. He spread horror stories about himself, which led to his ships surrendering without a fight. He captured the slave frigate La Concorde, which he equipped with cannons and renamed Queen Anne's Revenge. The British government repeatedly offered him a pardon if he abandoned piracy. But he didn't last long in the life of a law-abiding citizen. In 1718, shortly after his return among the pirates, he was ambushed and killed by soldiers at sea. After his death, his severed head was hung from a mast and his body thrown into the sea. The wreck of the Queen Anne's Revenge was discovered in 1996 off the coast of North Carolina.
The obverse shows a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadly and the inscriptions "QUEEN ELIZABETH II", "TUVALU 1 DOLLAR", the year of issue and weight and purity data.
The coin comes in a protective plastic capsule and is limited to a mintage of only 15,000 for the entire world!
