Terracotta Army - 5 Oz
Issued by the State of Fiji for 2020 and minted by the Scottsdale Mint in the finest 99.9% pure silver, this five-ounce (155.52 g) silver investment coin with an antique finish is dedicated to the "Terracotta Army", part of the largest tomb in the world - the mausoleum of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty.
The originally announced mintage of 10,000 pieces was reduced to 2,500 due to restrictions caused by Covid-19.
On its reverse, the coin shows a trench view of an orderly line of soldiers of the Terracotta Army of Qin Emperor Shi Huangti. The individual figures illustrate the current state of the statues. Some have lost their heads and their hands clutch unpreserved wooden weapons. Chinese characters 兵马俑 (Terracotta Army) complete the motif. The coin is struck in a patinated design, the edge of the coin is polished and irregular as if hand-worked.
The terracotta army dates from the 3rd century BC and was discovered by peasants in 1974 while digging a well. It is part of the burial complex of the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty. It consists of more than 8,000 soldiers, horses and war chariots. The statues were crafted with impressive details. Each one is unique with unique facial features and is complete with armor and real weapons. The statues themselves were made piecemeal from individual parts. The entire statue was then modelled, fired and painted in colour to a realistic likeness.
The obverse of the coin depicts the Fiji national emblem surrounded by the inscriptions "FIJI", the year of issue, weight, purity, and face value.
The coin comes in a stylish pouch with a certificate of authenticity.
