50th Anniversary of the Golden Krugerrand ("1967" - "2017")
Minted by the South African Mint in 2017 from the purest 99.9% silver, this silver investment coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Krugerrand, a gold investment coin minted since 1967. The coin's name was created by composing the name of the then President of the Boer Transvaal, Kruger, and the South African currency, the Rand. These coins have become the world's most popular investment coins. The success of the Krugerrand led to the introduction of the Canadian Maple Leaf in 1979 and the Australian Nugget in 1986. Gold Krugerrands are traditionally accompanied by copper. For example, an ounce coin weighs exactly 33.9305g and contains a full ounce (1 Oz - 31.1g) of pure gold, the remainder being 2.826g of copper, which causes the coin to be a different colour.
The obverse shows a portrait of Paul Kruger, President of the Boer Transvaal (1883-1900), looking left. The portrait is accompanied by the inscription "SUID AFRIKA - SOUTH AFRICA" (by Otto Schultz).
The reverse bears the traditional depiction of an African gazelle in a leap, South Africa's national symbol. The motif is complemented by the inscription 'FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINESILVER R1'. The design also incorporates a special mark symbolizing the 50th anniversary. The global mintage of these coins is limited to 1,000,000 pieces for the entire world!
