Lunar Series - Year of the Sheep 2003
Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2003, this 34 g silver lunar coin, made of the purest silver and copper and gilded with 24 carat gold, is dedicated to the lunar sign of the Sheep (Goat).
The reverse side of the coin depicts in its centre the image of a sheep on a gold-plated octagonal cameo, surrounded by depictions of all 12 signs of the Chinese lunar horoscope. The Chinese horoscope allows one to look at the zodiac from a different perspective. Its system is somewhat different from the European one and is based on a system of 12 "animals". These are assigned time periods. One "animal" always rules a certain year, which is shifted compared to our calendar, starting approximately at the turn of January and February. The licence includes a stencil portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Dora de Pédery Hunt. The portrait is surrounded by the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "15 DOLLARS", "CANADA", "2003" and the artist's initials "DH".
The coin comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 68,888 pieces for the entire world!
