Aladdin's 1001 Nights

An exclusive 5 Oz silver coin issued by the State of Djibouti for 2022 in the finest 99.9% pure silver with a Proof-like finish combining detailed embossing and a hologram colour effect. The coin's motif is inspired by the Arabic collection The Thousand and One Nights and tells the popular story - Aladdin and the Magic Lamp.

The motif on the reverse side of the coin depicts the magic lamp with iridescent hologram reflections. From the lamp, a plot unfolds like magic smoke, in which the characters and animal forms from the adventures of Aladdin and the Genie alternate. In the end, the flying carpet carries Aladdin and the princess to a happy ending.
A Thousand and One Nights is a colourful collection of fairy tales, fables, riddles and songs that have been written over hundreds of years. They originate from the Arabic, Persian, Egyptian and also Indian regions. The collection is introduced and linked by the relationship between King Shahriar and his wife Scheherazade, who is condemned to execution. For a thousand and one nights, the wise woman entertains the king with long stories. She never finishes them before dawn. So the king must postpone Scheherazade's execution to hear the end of the tale the following evening.
The tale of Aladdin and the magic lamp was not in the original Arabic version. It was not included in the collection until the French translator and orientalist Antoine Galland included it in the 18th century.

The obverse of the coin depicts Shahrazad and the king against the background of the palace. The windows of the building glow into the night with the reflections of a hologram. The ribbon beneath them contains the title of the Arabic collection "One Thousand & One Nights". The inscription "ALADDIN" appears at the top edge of the coin and the year of issue "2022" at the bottom edge. It includes a small circle with the national emblem of the Republic of Djibouti with the inscription 'REPUBLIQUE DE DJIBOUTI', the face value '250 FRANCS' and the fineness and weight information.
