Warriors - Samurai 2 Oz
An exclusive silver coin with an amber inlay issued by the State of Niue in 2019 in high relief weighing 2 Oz (62.2 g) in purity of the purest 99.9% silver with an Antique Standard finish is released as part of the Warriors series, which will introduce the legendary warriors one by one. The first coin in the series features a Japanese samurai.
The coin bears a composite image on its reverse. Against a background of Japanese architecture and the emblem of the rising sun, the samurai is depicted in heavy armour. To the right is a large close-up of the warrior's face, which is largely protected by a helmet. The helmet decorations are gilded and complemented by an amber inlay. Above the figure is a gilded Japanese emblem for samurai.
Samurai served the emperor or other lord for nearly 700 years. During their lives, they followed a code of ethics called the bushido (Way of the Warrior), which defined values such as loyalty to their master, self-discipline and ethics. In addition to studying bushido, the samurai also devoted themselves to the art of poetry. His poems were laced with moments before and during battle, quests, and feelings of impending death. The samurai's most important value was his honor. Before losing it, he preferred the ritual suicide of seppuku, also known as harakiri.
The obverse shows the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain with the initials of the artist and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE ISLANDS", the denomination and the year of issue. It includes purity information and mint mark.
