Warfare - Roman Legion
Issued by the State of Tuvalu and minted by the Australian Mint Perth in 2018, this exclusive two ounce silver coin of the finest 99.99% purity with an antique finish is the first coin in the Warfare series and features the Roman Legions as its subject.
The reverse of the coin depicts a battle scene from antiquity in elaborate minting. The image depicts Roman soldiers dressed in plate armour and helmets in fierce combat with members of the Gallic tribes (Celts). The entire motif extends to the edge of the coin.
The Roman legions are historically the most powerful military units of antiquity. Only a Roman citizen under 45 years of age could become a member. They were distinguished by their fighting morale, rigorous training and weaponry. Legion units protected the borders of the Roman Empire and led military campaigns to conquer new territories. In the 1550s of the 1st century BC, a military campaign against the Celts began under Julius Caesar. During the so-called Gallic Wars, the native tribes were eventually defeated and assimilated under the subsequent rule of Rome. Romanisation began in the newly conquered territories, characterised by the development of infrastructure, economy and culture. In the following centuries, the Latin-influenced Gaelic language gradually gave rise to French.
The obverse traditionally depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the inscriptions 'QUEEN ELIZABETH II', '2 OZ', '999 SILVER', '2018', 'TUVALU', '2 DOLLARS'.
The coin comes in its original gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 2,000 pieces for the entire world!
The first coin in the Warfare series comes with cardboard 3D glasses and instructions for easy assembly. Use Smarphone and NFC wireless communication technology to view panoramic battle scenes in a three-dimensional 360° image. The technology requires an internet connection and may not be compatible with older Smarphone models. 3D images are being released for other coins in this series and will be made available for viewing by Perth Mint by 31 December 2019. If you have difficulty using the glasses or viewing, please contact the Perth Mint Customer Services team directly.
