Vasily Andreyevich Tropinin

Tropinin_Vasily

Vasily Andreyevich Tropinin (19 March 1776, Karpovka, Novgorodskaya Gubernia - 4 May 1857, Moscow) was a Russian painter of the Romantic period.

He was born a serf and spent most of his life in this position. However, he was a favourite of Count Münnich and Count Arkady Markoff, who helped him to gain admission to the St. Petersburg Academy. There he studied under S. S. Schukin (1799-1804). After graduating from this art school, he settled in Moscow. He did not gain his freedom until he was forty. He painted his landscapes and genre paintings ("The Old Beggar", "The Lace-maker", "The Albanian Girl at the Door"...) and also portraits (N. M. Karazmina, K. A. Lebrecht, A. S. Pushkin, L. P. Tatishchev, N. V. Gogol, Tsar Nicholas I.).

Tropinin's oeuvre includes about 3,000 paintings. Today they are in the possession of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and in private collections. The most valuable are considered to be "Portrait of Alexander Pushkin", "The Lace-maker" and "The Embroiderer in Gold".
