Detailed description
Series "Biblical Art" 2019 - Twelve Scouts
This exclusive silver coin issued by the Bank of Israel in 2019 is dedicated to the story of Numbers 13, which describes the sending of the twelve spies to the Promised Land.
The coin is the twenty-third in the world's popular "Biblical Art" series and features on its reverse two men returning from exploring the Promised Land. On the sculpture they carry on their shoulders is suspended a huge grape cluster. Another of the seven types of choice fruit brought is represented by a pomegranate at the lower right edge and an olive branch at the top. On the left is a jug from which milk flows, symbolizing the abundance of the land visited.
After the exodus from Egypt, the Children of Israel wandered through the desert into Canaan. This God-promised land was to become their home. In the second year of their journey through the wilderness of Paran, Moses, at the Lord's command, sent twelve men to explore the land, including its cities and inhabitants. After forty days of wandering, they returned to their people. They brought news of a land flowing with milk and honey, and they brought fruit as proof of its abundance. But they described its cities as large and heavily fortified, and compared its inhabitants to giants and monsters. The ten scouts slandered the god-chosen land and spread the idea among the people that it was impossible to settle there. Of the twelve, only Joshua and Caleb believed in God's help. So God decided to punish the Israelites for their disparagement and unbelief. None of this generation over the age of twenty would enter the Promised Land. The only exceptions were Joshua and Caleb because they believed in God's help. The people would wander in the wilderness for the next forty years until the last of them died, and then the Lord would bring their children into the Promised Land.
The obverse shows the national emblem of Israel, the denomination, the year of issue, the grape, the mintmark "מ" and the inscriptions "THE TWELVE SPIES", "NUMBERS 13" (in English/Hebrew/Arabic).
The coin comes in a gift box with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 2,800 pieces for the whole world!
