Louis VII of France

Louis_VII_le_Jeune

Louis VII of France (1120 - 18 September 1180 Paris) was a French king of the Capetian dynasty, son of Louis VI and Adele of Maurienne, crowned in 1131 at Reims. At the age of fifteen he married Eleonora, heiress of Aquitaine, and a year later, after his father's death, became King of France. In 1147-1149, he and his wife took part in the Second Crusade to the Holy Land. During the expedition, an estrangement occurred between the two spouses, which culminated in their divorce in 1152.

At the Council of Bourges in Christmas 1145, he announced that he would embark on an armed expedition to the Holy Land to militarily support the Christian states there, which had been weakened especially after the loss of Edessa in 1144. The situation was complicated because Louis seemed to ignore the authority of the Pope and his claim to declare a crusade. The problematic situation was only removed by the king's direct negotiations with the papal curia. Thus, on 1 March 1146, Pope Eugene III issued a bull in which he declared himself the originator of the crusade and entrusted Bernard of Clairvaux with its proclamation. This was done on 31 March 1146 at the Diet of Vézelay, where Louis also accepted the cross. Unlike the First Crusade, Bernard's appeal was not to the people, but primarily to the rulers and the warrior elite.
