Silver Coin with Amber - Scarab
A unique silver coin issued by the State of Niue for 2020 and precision minted by the Polish Mint from the purest 99.9% silver weighing 2 Oz represents the scarab - the ancient Egyptian symbol of rebirth.
The reverse of the coin depicts a partially coloured scarab with outstretched wings. Three inlays of genuine amber are set into the ornamented background.
For the ancient Egyptians, the scarab was a sacred symbol of the solar cycle and rebirth. The beetle's characteristic rolling ball of droppings recalled the movement of the sun across the sky from east to west. It was also believed that scarab beetles were only females, which were born from the seed stored in the ball, i.e., from themselves and from decomposition.
In the form of a powerful amulet, the winged scarab was placed on the mummies' hearts. In everyday life, wearing scarab amulets brought good luck, wealth and protection from evil powers to the Egyptians.
The obverse depicts the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, along with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE ISLAND", purity, denomination, year of issue in the artist's initials and mint mark.
