Royal Tour of Canada - Royal Star
Issued by the State of Niue in 2019, this unique star-shaped silver coin minted from the purest 99.9% silver and weighing 1 Oz in premium proof quality commemorates the 80th anniversary of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth's tour of the Canadian provinces.
The centre reverse of the coin depicts the crowned royal couple, captured in left profile, against a backdrop of a faithfully coloured Canadian landscape. Around the centre of the coin are the inscriptions "ROYAL TOUR OF CANADA" and "KING GEORGE VI - QUEEN ELIZABETH", flanked by a design symbolizing the tracks of a railway. The top of the star features the national symbol of Canada - the maple leaf. The same leaf complements the year of the event "1939" at the left end and the anniversary year "2019" at the right end. A maple leaf arrangement descends from both symbols and joins at the lower tip of the star. Here is the shield of the Canadian national emblem as it was in effect in 1939.
The first visit to Canada by a British reigning monarch took place in late May or early June 1939. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrived by ship in Quebec and from there proceeded west by rail. Accompanied by the Canadian Prime Minister, they visited all the provinces of Canada in turn. The visit was a much watched event, drawing crowds in each new city.
The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, surrounded by the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE 2019", the denomination, weight, purity and the artist's initials "IRB". Each point of the star contains one symbol of the United Kingdom - a rose (England), a thistle (Scotland), a leek (Wales) and a shamrock (Ireland).
