Petr Brandl
Petr Jan Brandl (German. Peter Johann Brandl, he wrote himself Petrus Brandl; 24 October 1668 Prague - 24 September 1735 Kutná Hora) was a Czech painter, one of the main representatives of the High Baroque in Bohemia.
He was the son of relatively wealthy parents. His father was a German tailor and innkeeper, his mother from a Czech peasant family from Přestanice. He was educated at a Jesuit grammar school. At the age of 33 he married, fathered three children and later left the family. He was relatively well paid for his works, but he mostly squandered the money and was constantly in debt and harassed by creditors. He hoped unsuccessfully to consolidate his financial situation by buying a plot of land in Jílové during the gold rush there. He died abandoned and in poverty in Kutná Hora, where he is buried.
He learnt painting under the Prague court painter Kristian Schröder, who was the administrator of the castle picture gallery. Schröder, however, could not give Brandl more than the basics of painting technique. His main teachers were Jan Rudolf Bys and Michael Václav Halbax. He was greatly influenced by the art of Karel Škréta and also by the art of Abraham Godin, Michael Leopold Willmann and Jan Kryštof Liška. In his work, Brandl arrived at his own synthesis of these painterly influences. He is one of the most important representatives of High Baroque painting in Central Europe and in his best works he reaches the highest level of European painting at that time.
