Detailed description
Sea Battle - The Battle of Midway 2 Oz
An exclusive silver coin issued by the State of Niue for 2021, in high relief weighing 2 Oz (62.2 g) in purity of the purest 99.9% silver with an Antique Standard finish, it comes as part of the Sea Battle series commemorating famous naval engagements. The theme of the second coin is the Battle of Midway, one of the pivotal battles in the Pacific during World War II.
On its reverse, the coin presents a raw war scene over the strategic atoll of Midway, taking place at sea and in the air. Smoke and massive explosions reveal a decimated Japanese fleet pursued by dive-bombers with a star on their hull, even at the cost of their own destruction. The pivoting propeller of the bomber symbolizes the crucial role and sacrifice of the American pilots in the battle. The inscription "THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY" appears at the bottom edge of the coin.
The Battle of Midway (June 3-7, 1942) is the first of the key American victories over the Japanese in World War II. After the U.S. experienced shocking losses in the ambush of the Pearl Harbor naval base in December 1941, Japan launched a successful campaign to strengthen its defensive and offensive positions in the South Pacific. The next challenge for the Japanese was the U.S. air and naval base on the isolated island of Midway, located between the warring countries in the middle of the ocean. The holder of this forward position gained a huge advantage in controlling the Pacific.
Japan prepared for the landing on Midway Island by spreading false intelligence. The Americans were led to believe that forces must be concentrated on the defense of Alaska. However, the Secret Service managed to break the Japanese code and revealed that the enemy's real target was Midway. So on the day of the attack, the Japanese fleet walked into a trap. The four Japanese carriers were met by three U.S. carriers supported by more than a hundred aircraft. The pilots of the American torpedo bombers began a fierce battle to destroy the Japanese planes before they could take off. It was a heroic suicide mission on the part of the pilots, and only 6 of the 41 men survived. Subsequently, dive bombers dominated the skies, and within minutes devastating fires hit three Japanese ships. The only combat-capable ship and her squadron could no longer turn the tide of the battle, and she herself was sunk the next morning. The battle marked a turning point in the course of the war in the Pacific, and Japan lost its dominance in the area.
The obverse of the coin charts the Battle of Midway Island. It includes a labeled description of the clash strategy of the two armies involved with silhouettes of the vessels. Among the clouds at the bottom, the secret of the broken cipher is symbolically revealed. Includes a portrait of Elizabeth II with the author's initials. The inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE", the face value, the year of issue, the purity data and the mint mark are shown on the rim of the coin.
The coin comes in a luxury wooden box with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of only 500 pieces for the whole world!
