Music Legends - The Rolling Stones 1 Oz
Issued by the Royal British Mint in 2022, this 1 Oz silver coin with colour printing in the finest 99.9% pure Proof silver is part of the Music Legends series celebrating iconic British artists. The fifth coin in the series is being released to celebrate the 60th anniversary of rock'n'roll's most famous band - The Rolling Stones.
The design for the first official UK coin issue dedicated to The Rolling Stones has been approved by its members.
On the reverse side of the coin, British designer Hannah Phizackleay authentically captures the unique atmosphere of a live concert by The Rolling Stones. It captures the band's dynamic performance on stage in front of rows of fans. Although the individual members are outlined only in silhouette, their identity is quite clear. The design uses contrasting textile structures. At the top of the coin is the coloured inscription "The Rolling Stones", used for promotional material in 1973. At the bottom edge of the coin are the abbreviated anniversary years "'62-'22".
The Rolling Stones were founded in London in 1962. The classic line-up consisted of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. The following year, the Stones released their first single "Come On", which reached number 21 in the UK singles chart on 31 July 1963. The debut album, simply named The Rolling Stones, in 1964 subsequently became the UK's number one album. They reached their first UK number one single with "It's All Over Now" on 8 July 1964.
The band continued to release more hits into the late 1960s, seven of which reached number one in the singles charts. These included the now-classic "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". However, the rising fame was not without a tragic consequence, which was the death of Brian Jones on July 3, 1969. A string of successes followed in the 1970s, as well as the addition of new member Mick Taylor, later replaced by Ronnie Wood. The Rolling Stones' unmistakable sound and style fulfilled the premise of becoming "the best rock'n'roll band in the world".
The work rate and the coterie of distinctive personalities resulted in a crisis during the 1980s. The band's disintegration may have been averted only by its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, which sent the Rolling Stones on to other milestones. Through acoustic and live recordings and concerts in the decades that followed, the living musical legend became a part of fans' lives and influenced several generations of musicians. He holds the unique distinction of occupying the number one spot on the official domestic chart in six decades with his albums.
The obverse bears a portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark with his initials "J.C". The inscriptions "ELIZABETH II. D.G.REG.F.D.", the denomination "2 POUNDS" and the year of issue "2022".
The coin comes in a Royal Mint gift box with a themed booklet and numbered certificate of authenticity, limited to 8,000 pieces worldwide!
