Hand-decorated silver coin - Murrine Millefiori Murano
This unique silver coin, issued by the State of Cook Islands in 2016 as the second in the "Glass Art" series, is struck in the purest 99.9% silver, weighing 20 grams in a premium proof grade, and is dedicated to the traditional Italian glassmaking technique of Murrine Millefiori Murano.
The reverse of the coin depicts a heart in its centre decorated with the Millefiori hand technique, which was known in ancient Rome and is nowadays mainly used on the island of Murano near Venice. In the Millefiori technique, small glass plates are slowly fused into the desired shape and then transferred to the silver coins. This guarantees the originality of each coin and no two coins are alike. The hearts are surrounded by the inscriptions "Murrine Millefiori", "Glass Art" and the year of issue. The rim of the coin is decorated with original floral motifs also made using the glass fusing technique. The obverse bears a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the inscriptions 'ELIZABETH II', 'COOK ISLANDS', the face value and the artist's initials 'IRB'.
The coin comes in a wooden gift box along with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 999 pieces for the whole world!
