Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa (born Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, 26 August 1910 - 5 September 1997) was a Catholic nun, missionary and humanitarian, and founder of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. She was one of the principal opponents of contraception and abortion and a leading figure in the pro-life movement. She received numerous awards for her humanitarian work: the first ever Templeton Prize (1973), the Nobel Peace Prize (1979), the British Order of Merit (1983) and India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna (1980).

MotherTeresa

She was born on 26 August 1910 in an Albanian family as the youngest daughter of Nikolle Bojaxhiu, a successful businessman and pharmacist, and Drane Bojaxhiu (Barnaj's maiden name) in the town of Shkupi (now Skopje). Her birthplace was then part of Albania in the Ottoman Empire. She was christened Agnese, but at home she was called Gonxha (bud). Already at the age of twelve, she decided to enter the religious life. The Balkan Wars and the First World War changed the political map of the world and Skopje fell to Macedonia. These events scattered the Bojaxhiu family around the world. Agnese went to Ireland and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Loreto in 1928. This religious community was active mainly in India, which attracted Agnese.

After a short training in Dublin in 1929, Agnese went to India. In Darjeeling she took her novitiate vows and took the name Teresa. She taught geography at a missionary girls' school. Because of her talents and organizational skills, Teresa was entrusted with the management of St. Mary's Higher Mission School in Calcutta.

In 1946, Sister Teresa left the Loreto convent by agreement with the superiors and began to devote herself to the poorest and dying. In 1949, she was surrounded by enough women co-workers to found the Calcutta Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity (Missionaries of Charity, Congregation of Mercy). On October 7, 1950, the Holy See recognized the new religious community guided by Franciscan principles. Teresa founded shelters for the dying, orphans and abandoned children. She built hospitals and schools. Within a few years, she made enormous efforts and succeeded in laying the foundations for a great humanitarian work.

Towards the end of her life, she made many trips around the world, using her popularity and the opportunities she had to meet with eminent personalities to promote the social activities of her congregation and to spread Christian ideas. Her opposition to abortion became a significant part of her Nobel Peace Prize speech. She called abortion "the greatest destroyer of peace" and declared: If a mother can kill her child, what stops me from killing you and you from killing me?

Mother Teresa, as she came to be called, visited many places of human suffering in the world: a settlement with displaced people after the Chernobyl disaster, in besieged Beirut she sought out children at risk of war - she found sixty of them maimed and sick in the ruins of the city and managed to evacuate them all to safety.

When asked if sixty children were not enough, Mother Teresa replied: I don't care about the crowd. If I saw crowds of poor people, I could never begin my work. I am only interested in my fellow man, in the individual, in the one I can help, and so I help...
