Detailed description

The Moon landing - first step

A uniquely shaped spherical silver coin issued by the State of Barbados in 2019 and minted from the purest 99.9% silver weighing 1 Oz in a precise Antique and High Relief finish. The coin is dedicated to one of the most significant events in human history - the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar mission and the first man on the moon.

The reverse side of the spherical coin is dominated by a sculptural impression of the astronaut's footprint, which is embedded in the lunar surface covering most of the coin's surface, creating a 3D effect.

The obverse bears the national emblem of Barbados and the inscription "BARBADOS" above it. Also included is the year of issue divided into two halves, the denomination "5 DOLLARS" and weight and purity information.

The coin is supplied in a presentation box, which is inserted into the original paper wrapper, which also serves as a certificate. The mintage of the coin is limited to only 1,969 pieces for the entire world!

The goal of the Apollo 11 spaceflight was to land a manned mission on the Moon, ascend to its surface and return safely to Earth. The mission participants were Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Command Module Pilot Michael Collins. The Apollo 11 comet was carried into Earth orbit by a Saturn rocket on July 16, 1969. Three days later, a manned flight orbited the Moon, and on July 20, 1969, the Eagle space module with Armstrong and Aldrin aboard landed on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquillitatis). On July 21, at 2:56:15 UTC, Neil Armstrong became the first man to step onto the lunar surface and uttered memorable words: "It is a small step for man, but a great leap for mankind". Together with Aldrin, they spent 2.5 hours outside the lunar module and collected nearly 22 kg of rocks. After 21.5 hours, they returned to the Columbia command module, which for that time was piloted in orbit only by Collins. They returned to Earth on July 24 by landing in the Pacific Ocean.
