Queen Mary's Lover's Knot Tiara

Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2021, this exclusive silver coin with mother-of-pearl and Swarovski crystals in Proof quality of the purest 99.99% silver weighing 31.39 grams features Queen Mary's Lover's Knot tiara, part of Queen Elizabeth II's personal jewellery collection.

The unique coin bears a stylised image of part of the Lover's Knot tiara on its reverse. The rhodium-plated jewel features an ornament of three interlaced heart-shaped knots. The pearls in this design are replaced by faithful imitations of mother-of-pearl, complete with four small crystals. The setting of the central pearl-shaped element is accentuated by three larger crystals and a chain pattern. The decoration continues on the rim of the coin, connecting the inscription "CANADA" at the top of the coin and the denomination "20 DOLLARS" at the bottom edge. The Lover's Knot tiara was commissioned by Queen Mary from the jeweller Garrard in 1913. Diamonds and pearls from other family jewellery were used for the production. The model was the Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara, which Mary greatly admired, but which was owned by the Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. After Queen Mary's death in 1953, the jewel was passed on to her granddaughter Elizabeth II. The new owner had a number of upright pearls removed. This treatment also reliably distinguishes it today from the Cambridge tiara, with which it is often confused. It gained its fame after 1981, when the Queen lent it to her daughter-in-law Princess Diana on a long-term loan. After her divorce from the heir to the throne, Diana's favourite tiara went back to the royal treasury. It reappeared in 2013 with the new Duchess of Cambridge. Catherine thus became the fourth woman of the royal dynasty to wear a tiara with a "lover's knot".

The obverse features four coin portraits of Elizabeth II that became part of Canadian coins during her reign. These are two modified versions of the British original by Mary Gillick (1953-1964) and Arnold Machin RA (1965-1989) and Canadian designs by Dora de Pédery-Hunt (1990-2002) and Susanna Blunt (since 2003). The individual portrait medallions are interlaced with acanthus ornament. The year of issue "2021" is indicated in the centre of the coin, which is complemented by the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D.G.REGINA" in the description.
