Joan of Arc
Saint Joan of Arc (French: Jeanne d'Arc; 6 January 1412 Domrémy-la-Pucelle - 30. May 1431 Rouen), also known as Joan of Arc, nicknamed the Virgin of Orléans (La Pucelle d'Orléans), Joan of Arc (Jeanne la Pucelle) or Good Lorraine (La bonne Lorraine), was a French heroine who led French troops during the Hundred Years' War against the English and was eventually burned for heresy. She was later declared a martyr after being vindicated, beatified in 1909 and declared a saint in 1920. She is a co-patron of France.
Joan was probably born in 1412 to a wealthy peasant family in the Lorraine village of Domrémy, now Domrémy-la-Pucelle. Shortly thereafter, the third stage of the Hundred Years' War began. The English landed on the continent and in 1415 won a victory at Azincourt. They then gradually took control of northern France. In 1420, King Henry V of England and King Charles VI of France signed the Treaty of Troyes, which gave the English monarchy of Lancaster the hereditary claim to the French crown after Charles's death. This ignored the succession claims of the Dauphin Charles. After the early death of Charles VI († 1422), the recently born son of the prematurely deceased Henry V and Charles's daughter Catherine of Valois, Henry VI, became heir to the throne. The Dauphin Charles withdrew south of the Loire and gave up activity. It was then that widespread popular resistance against the English usurpers was born.
From the age of 14, Joan heard voices and had visions in which angels and saints appeared to her. Joan prayed to them for the salvation of France, as the mercenary English armies were pillaging and burning her native land and were closing in on Orleans. The voices of the saints told her beyond any doubt that she had been chosen by God to liberate France. Inspired by these voices and by the strength of her own personality, her faith in God and her conviction in her mission, she came forward publicly with her intentions.
