Janko Matúška (10 January 1821 - 11 January 1877) - poet from the Štúrovo generation. He came from an Orava landowning family. While studying at the Evangelical Gymnasium in Bratislava, he took part in the activities of Štúr's retinue. He wrote poems, but was also attracted to historicist themes, ballads, verse tales and drama. He became famous for composing the lyrics of a song that became the national anthem of the Slovak Republic in the 20th century, in a moment of indignation over the dismissal of Ľudovít Štúr from his teaching post. After finishing his studies, he worked in the state service in his native Orava. From 1851 to 1870 he was a government official until he became the administrator of the Chancellery of the County Court in Dolní Kubín. In 1848 he was one of the local organizers of the revolution. In 1849 he had to hide in the mountains where he fell ill. Health problems accompanied him until the end of his life and were the reason for his retirement. His work, although modest in scale, belongs to the Golden Fund of Slovak Romantic literature.
