Apostle Peter

The Apostle Peter, originally named Simon (Pope ca. 30 - 64/67 Rome) was one of the twelve original apostles - disciples of Jesus Christ. He is considered the first pope.

According to biblical sources, St. Peter was born in Bethsaida as the son of a fisherman, John or Jonah, and his birth name was Simon. He received his primary education in his father's house and in a synagogue school. He married and settled in Capernaum, a village on the Lake of Gennesaret, and with his brother Andrew they made their living as fishermen. According to legend, his wife's name was Perpetua and his daughter's name was Petronilla. One day as he and his brother Andrew were casting their net into the water, Jesus passed by and called to the two fishermen to follow him. The brothers obeyed, and from that moment on Simon became Christ's most faithful disciple. He witnessed many of his deeds and miracles.

It was he who was chosen by Jesus to be the first of the twelve apostles He chose from among His disciples to preach the gospel and perform miracles. He also gave him the name Peter: "Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam". This famous quote from the Bible contains a play on words, since the original Aramaic text uses the word "cepha" which means both Peter and rock.
