Paul of Tarsus
St. Paul of Tarsus, the Apostle Paul, in Hebrew Saul (Saul), in Czech also Shavel, is one of the most important biblical figures, his story is told in the New Testament. He is counted among the apostles, although he was not one of the original twelve and did not meet Jesus personally, except for the miracle of conversion on the road to Damascus. It was through him that Christianity began to spread among the Gentiles and became a world religion. He is therefore often considered the de facto founder of Christianity. According to tradition, he is the author of 14 letters of the New Testament, 7 of which are attributed to him today.
When the first Christians, after the stoning of the deacon Stephen, at which Saul was present, scattered to Judea and Samaria because they did not feel safe in Jerusalem, Saul also began to travel around Judea persecuting the followers of this movement. While on his way to Damascus to arrest the Christians there, he was blinded by a light from heaven on the way and heard a voice say, "Saul, why are you persecuting me". This moment marked a turning point in his life and in the history of Christianity. Paul embraced the Christian faith he had been persecuting. He first went into seclusion, lived in Damascus for several years (where he learned the trade of tent-making), then joined missionary groups and began preaching.
