Apostle John

St. John the Evangelist, apostle and evangelist († about 100, Hebrew for God is merciful). Often called "John of the Latin Gate," he is considered the author of the fourth canonical Gospel, the Gospel according to John. And considered the wisest Christian. The disciple whom Jesus loved most. The Apostle Paul once called John, along with Peter and James, "pillars of the church."

According to church tradition, John came to Ephesus around 69, from where he then led all the churches he had previously founded. In 95, he is said to have been arrested by Emperor Domitian, a cruel persecutor of Christians. After terrible torture, Domitian ordered John to be thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil. According to legend, however, the oil turned into a refreshing bath from which he emerged strengthened. When Domitian learned of this, he was so frightened that he had John released and sent him into exile on the island of Patmos. There he wrote the book of the Revelation of John. When Domitian died, John returned to Ephesus and wrote his gospel there. According to tradition, he was the teacher of St. Polycarp, whom he made bishop of Smyrna. He died about 101 in the old age of Ephesus. He became the only apostle to die of natural causes. Nothing is reliably known about where he is buried or where his remains remain. Some sources say he was buried on a hill near Ephesus.
