Carmen
Carmen is an 1875 opera by Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on the novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée.
This work, which is now counted among the most popular and most performed operas of all time, was a complete flop when it premiered on 3 March 1875. For a French audience accustomed to grand operas, Carmen proved too complicated and too naturalistic.
Bizet died a quarter of a year after the premiere, disappointed but firmly convinced that this was his best opera. He was only proved right by his growing success abroad a few years later.
