Gdansk

Gdansk_flag

Gdańsk (Polish: Gdańsk, Kashubian: Gduńsk, German: Danzig, Latin: Gedania, Gedanum or Dantiscum) is one of the oldest and largest Polish cities, located in Pomerania on the Vistula River on the shores of the Baltic Sea (Gulf of Gdańsk). The city is the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship. It currently has 455,717 inhabitants (2008).

Together with the cities of Sopot and Gdynia, it forms an agglomeration for which the name Tri-City (Polish: Trójmiasto) is commonly used. The city lies at the mouth of the Motlava River into the Vistula. The mouth of the Vistula forms the eastern administrative boundary of the city.

The main Warsaw-Gdynia railway line runs through the city, and parallel to it runs the Szybka kolej miejska (Szybka kolej miejska), providing transport across the Gdańsk agglomeration. Near Gdansk is the small Westerplatte peninsula, where World War II began on 1 September 1939.
