Godefroy of Bouillon
Godefroy of Bouillon ([godefroj z bouillon]; sometimes referred to as Godefroi, also Gottfried or Bohumír of Bouillon in older Czech literature; French Godefroy de Bouillon; 1060 - 18 July 1100) was a Lorraine duke and one of the leaders of the First Crusade. He was born the middle son of Count Eustace II and his second wife Ida of Boulogne, who was descended from Charlemagne. In his youth, Godefroy swore an oath to the Roman-German king Henry IV, on whose side he fought in the War of the Investiture and took part in the conquest of Rome in 1083.
When in 1095 Pope Urban II announced the First Crusade for the Liberation of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, Godefroy soon announced his participation. He sold or mortgaged most of his property[4] and set out on the crusade with his brothers. He participated with the expedition in all the decisive battles, Nicaea, Dorylaea, Antioch, and the final assault on Jerusalem in June 1099. After the conquest of Jerusalem, he was elected ruler of the city and the conquered territories with the title of Protector of the Holy Sepulchre by the Crusader grandees. At the head of the Crusader armies, he then repelled the attack of the Fatima and Damascus armies, but then fell seriously ill and died in Jerusalem in 1100. For subsequent generations of Franks in the Crusader states, Godefroy became a legend, and his strength and courage became the subject of many truware songs.
