Endangered nature

Since 2013, the Czech Mint has issued four coloured silver coins each year as a permanent reminder of the irreversible disappearance of representatives of the plant and animal kingdom. In 2018, this four-coin series "Endangered Nature" is the last one, and it opens with a creature whose name does not evoke the most pleasant feelings - the steppe polecat.

A typical feature of polecats, carnivores in the weasel family, is territory marking, for which they use their undertail scent glands. The intensely smelly secretion also protects the polecat from enemies, who retreat immediately after being sprayed. As the species' name suggests, its home is primarily steppe habitat. The range of the steppe polecat extends from central Europe to northwest China. The Czech Republic forms the western boundary of the species' range, but specific reports on its current distribution are completely lacking. The mysterious beast is so inconspicuous in our nature that it escapes all attempts at observation. It could happen that the steppe polecat disappears completely without anyone noticing. It is therefore currently classified as a highly endangered species.

The animal, presented by experienced medalist MgA. Martin Dašek is traditionally depicted twice on the reverse side of the coin. The upper part of the coin presents an overall view of the polecat in vivid colours, which were achieved using pad printing technology. The lower part of the coin features a detailed relief view of the beast's face. The reverse description gives the bilingual name of the species: MUSTELA EVERSMANNII. The Czech Mint commemorative coins are issued under the licence of a foreign issuer, which is the Pacific island of Niue, and their obverse side therefore bears its necessary attributes - the profile and name of the monarch Elizabeth II, the face value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2018. Majka Wichnerová.

The coin is housed in an illustrated package that discusses the life of the polecats.
