Endangered Nature
The very last representative of the animal kingdom to be represented on the coloured silver coin of the Czech Mint from the "Endangered Nature" series is the river kingfisher.
The kingfisher is a brightly coloured bird that feeds mainly on smaller fish. It lurks for its prey perched on a branch hanging above the clear water and dive up to 1 metre below the surface. It can therefore be found near clear and slow-flowing streams and rivers, but also ponds, lakes, dams or wetlands. It requires vertical walls of clay or sandy banks in which it excavates burrows topped with a chamber. The young are often drowned when attempting to hunt them, and only half reach adulthood. Although the Czech population has increased in recent years - probably as a result of repeated mild winters when rivers do not freeze - the kingfisher is still a legally protected species. The biggest threat to these birds is the lack of breeding opportunities related to artificial regulation of streams and their pollution. Further conflict with humans comes when kingfishers choose fishponds, fish hatcheries or breeding streams as their hunting grounds.
On the reverse side of the coin from the workshop of experienced medalist MgA. Martin Dašek's mint, there are two depictions of the endangered platypus. The first one is in relief - it presents a detail of the kingfisher's head and presents it as a successful fisherman holding the caught prey in his beak. The second is coloured - depicting the kingfisher lurking on a branch and faithfully showing its characteristic colouration. The Czech Mint mints its own coins under the foreign licence of the island of Niue, and their obverse side therefore bears the attributes of this issuer: the profile and name of the monarch Elizabeth II, the face value of 1 DOLLAR (NZD) and the year of issue 2018. The composition of the obverse is completed by the depiction of a wild natural scenery from the workshop of ac. sculptor. Majka Wichnerová.The coin is housed in a narrative package in the form of an illustrated leaflet that tells about the life of kingfishers. You can store these books in fours in collector's boxes.
