Endangered Nature

Since 2013, the Czech Mint has issued four coloured silver coins each year as a permanent reminder of the irreversibly disappearing representatives of the plant and animal kingdom that can be found in the Czech Republic. In 2018, the four are the last, and the Endangered Nature series bids farewell with its twenty-fourth mintage, dominated by the marsh tolie.

Tolije bog is the only representative of its genus growing in the Czech Republic. While the Latin genus name of the charming herb "Parnassia" refers to the Greek mountain range that was the seat of the muses, the Czech genus name "tolije" is based on the Old Slavic word for pain. In the past it was called "heartwort" and was used in folk medicine to treat heart disease. The white petals of the toliya have distinct veins that give the flower the impression of a perfectly symmetrical work of art. Interestingly, in sunny weather the flower smells of honey and in the evening or in rainy weather it is scentless. Tolije loves humidity and cold and is rarely found in the Czech Republic - in a few scattered foothill and mountain areas. The decline of its population is due to the drainage of agricultural soils.

The reverse side of the coin, which is traditionally the work of the medal maker MgA. Martin Dašek, presents the flower of the herb in vivid colours, which is achieved by the technology of pad printing. The composition of the reverse is complemented by a glass rhinestone and a description giving the Czech and Latin name: TOLIJE BAHENNÍ - PARNASSIA PALUSTRIS L. The obverse side, which is decorated with plant motifs, bears the necessary attributes of the island of Niue, the issuer, which provides the Czech Mint with a foreign licence to issue its own coins. These attributes consist of the name and profile of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2018 and the face value of the coin, 1 DOLLAR (NZD).

Each coin in the Endangered Nature series is housed in a narrative illustrated package.
