Endangered nature

The Czech Mint's Endangered Nature series presents selected plants and animals that meet two criteria - they are found in the Czech Republic and their populations are threatened with extinction. The fourth silver coloured coin issued in 2017 belongs to the sand rock iris.

The sand iris has not had it easy in botanical circles. For a long time, the perennial herb with usually two pale to deep yellow flowers was listed as a separate species, but by the early 20th century it came to be regarded as a mere subspecies of the rock iris. Eventually, however, it was found to be so biologically distinct that it became a species in its own right again, and a highly endangered one at that. In the Czech Republic, the sand iris grows only in southern Moravia, where the absolute north-western boundary of its range runs. Its home is mainly in areas that were regularly grazed by sheep and goats in the past. However, since mankind has largely abandoned this method of management, the habitats have become overgrown with more resistant plants and woody debris. This deprives sand irises of nutrients, light and space to grow. Fortunately, most of their habitats are in protected areas where they are well cared for.

The coin is the work of the talented medalist MgA. Martin Dašek. He dedicated the reverse side to a pair of yellow flowers, which are special because each of them blooms only one day. Thanks to the colouring technology, they can be brought out in vivid colours. The composition is complemented by a glass rhinestone and a description consisting of the Czech and Latin name of the plant. ARENARIA. The obverse side of the coin bears an ornamental floral motif incorporating the attributes of the issuer of the coin, which is the island of Niue - the portrait and name of Queen Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2017 and the face value of the coin 1 DOLLAR (NZD).
