The Czech Mint's Endangered Nature series is coming to an end and presents its penultimate plant on the endangered species list. The coloured silver coin is dedicated to the Alpine Starflower.
The Alpine starflower is a perennial herb that gave its name to the entire star family and traditionally symbolizes mountain nature. As the species name suggests, it is mainly known in the Alps, but is also found, for example, in the Pyrenees and Slovakia, where it inhabits limestone and dolomite bedrock. It is very rare in our countryside - the last surviving clusters since the Ice Age are in the Jeseník Great Basin and the Czech Central Highlands - and the species is therefore classified as critically endangered. The specific ecological requirements of the starfish are to blame. It requires bedrock composed of igneous rocks such as basalt, siltstone, trachyte, rutile or phyllite to grow. Another factor leading to the threat of the species is human activity - the starflower is a popular ornamental plant and irresponsible people uproot it and transplant it into rockeries.
The starflower blooms in early summer and draws attention to itself with its striking colour contrast. The peripheral flowers are purple-blue and the centre of the inflorescence forms a target of golden yellow flowers, which is clearly visible on the reverse of the coin thanks to the colouring technology. The composition of the reverse is complemented by a glass rhinestone and a description stating the Czech and Latin name of the plant. This is the island of Niue and its details consist of the name and portrait of the monarch Elizabeth II, the year of issue 2018 and the face value of the coin 1 DOLLAR (NZD).
