Endangered Animals in Israel - Israel's 73rd Independence Day

An exclusive silver coin issued by the Bank of Israel in 2021 and minted in 99.9% silver purity in Proof quality to commemorate the 73rd anniversary of Independence Day highlights endangered animals in Israel.

The reverse of the coin features three of the animals in Israel that are on the verge of extinction. The Arabian leopard, caracal and sea turtle are depicted in their natural habitat. The title of the coin, "ENDANGERED ANIMALS IN ISRAEL", and its transcriptions in Hebrew and Arabic appear at the top.

The obverse side of the coin bears the national emblem of Israel, and the inscriptions in English "INDEPENDENCE DAY 2021" and "ISRAEL" are accompanied by transcriptions in Hebrew and partly in Arabic. A more detailed depiction of the Arab leopard motif on the reverse is included. The beast is linked to the distinctive numeral "2", which is the denomination of the Israeli currency coin "NEW SHEKELS" with an accompanying translation into Hebrew. Below the currency specification is the mint mark Mem "מ".

Arabian leopard: once considered the king of the desert. This imposing beast is now on the verge of extinction. Only a few individuals are found in the Judean Desert and the Negev Heights.
Caracal: also known as the desert lynx or African lynx, the caracal is one of the felid species that was once common in Israel. Today, only a few individuals are found in the desert areas of southern Israel and the Judean Desert. The caracal is also nearly extinct due to the devastation of its range and the decline of its food source.
Sea turtle: the number of sea turtles in Israel is declining. Its natural habitat along the coast has been destroyed by massive construction projects that include ports and residential areas. To build nests and lay eggs, the sea turtle needs an uninhabited, flat, sandy shore. Such areas are now disappearing, affecting turtles and adding them to the group of animals threatened with extinction.
