Biblical Stories series

An exclusive silver coin issued by the Republic of Palau in 2011 from the Biblical Stories series depicts on its reverse a white dove (colored with a unique white enamel technique that provides amazingly realistic colors) surrounded by light and the hands of God. Below the dove is the symbol of creation - the sun, flora, fauna, sea, fish and man. This is followed by the inscriptions "CREATION OF THE WORLD" and the year of publication. The obverse shows the national emblem of the Republic of Palau, an open bible surrounded by light with the inscriptions "BIBLICAL STORIES" and the denomination.

The coin comes in a blue gift box with grey and silver trim along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1000 pieces for the entire world!

Religious beliefs about Creation

Some religions include a belief in creation, some of which explain the existence and present form of the universe by the creative act of a supreme being, or Creator God. Most of these explanations describe gods creating things from themselves or from pre-existing matter, e.g. the Greek Pelasgian myth of the creation of the world.

The exceptions to this idea are some philosophical movements and religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, which hold to the claim of creation ex nihilo (from Latin: out of nothing). They rely on texts from the Sacred Books. An example of this would be 2 Thessalonians. The Book of Maccabees 7:28 I beg you, my child, look at the heavens and the earth, and notice all that is in them, and you will know that God created them out of nothing, and that mankind also came into existence). Look at 2. The book of Mababees is different in Judaism and Christianity. While in the Catholic Church and Orthodoxy, 2 Maccabees is included among the so-called deuterocanonical books that are part of the Biblical canon, Protestants classify the book as apocryphal. Judaism rejects the deuterocanonical books. Another example is the New Testament texts interpreted in certain ways, e.g., Hebrews 11:3 ("In faith we understand that by the word of God the worlds [lit., ages] were founded, so that what we look upon did not originate from what is seen" [Ecumenical Translation]).

The belief that God gave shape to pre-existent things was not originally completely foreign to these traditions, but the idea of creation out of nothing became increasingly articulated, especially under the influence of Greek philosophy. In both Judaism and Christianity, however, sometime in the second century CE, the belief in a creation "out of nothing" was beginning to completely dominate the traditions as a way of expressing the doctrine that God is eternal, in response to the teachings of philosophy. The following quotation from second century Rabbi Gamaliel II illustrates this reaction:

A philosopher said to Gamaliel: Your God was a great artist, but he discovered good material to assist him: Tohu-wa-Vohu and darkness and wind and water and the primordial deep. Gamaliel said to him: Let the wind blow from this man! Every material is meant to be created. Tohu-wa-Vohu: "I make peace and create evil"; darkness: "I form light and create darkness"; water: "Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters" --- why --- "Because he commanded and they were created"; wind: "For he formed the mountains and created the wind"; primeval deep: "When there were no depths, I was brought forth". BR 1.9, Th-Alb:8

Departing from this tradition, some modern scholars have argued that these statements and all others are still open to ambiguous interpretation, i.e., that creation ex nihilo cannot be clearly supported even by ancient texts, including the Bible. They point to the consistency of the biblical explanations with other ancient religious beliefs that the universe was created by God or gods from pre-existing matter, not "out of nothing." Some scholars see evidence that the biblical explanations, as well as other ancient religious views, assume the pre-existence of some kind of material, albeit without form: "Now the earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters." God then modifies the disordered material, and so creates the world.

One of the major problems in interpreting the basic biblical texts speaking of creation is that the original meaning of the key terms (tohu-wa-vohu or 'ed) is unknown today.
