Detailed description
Slavic calendar - calendar of Slavs
The exclusive silver coin partially filled with semi-permeable resin issued by the State of Niue in 2020 in high relief weighing 2 Oz (62.2 g) in the purest 99.9% silver with Antique Standard finish is inspired by the ancient Slavs and brings an original take on the lunisolar calendar.
The reverse side of the coin is based on the basic symbols of the ancient Slavs - a circle, a cross and the number four. The power of the circle is multiplied by the repetition of four identical circles, which form a cross between them and determine the seasons of the year. In the centre of the coin is placed the sacred tree of life, which refers to the strong connection of pagan religion with nature. The succeeding circle is decorated with a fine design and contains the emblems of the gods mentioned on the coin's rim (Perun, Dažbog, Svarog and Veles). In the next circle there are four motifs depicting the sun and the moon. Their layout represents the astronomical cycle of the lunisolar calendar.
The Slavic year begins in March with the vernal equinox. A day as long as the night is marked by a circle with the Sun and the Moon. The entire spring season is represented by a storm and a green color filling. The circle with the sun as the summer solstice motif ushers in summer. The mood of sunshine and ripe grain is enhanced by the yellow resin.
The following circle, in which the moon gains dominance over the sun and symbolises the autumnal equinox, ushers in autumn. This season is represented by the colour red and fire. With the Moon in the last circle comes the winter solstice and the end of the year. The cold of winter is expressed by the snowy peaks and blue resin.
The circle on the outer circle of the coin indicates the pagan festivals for that time of the year. These are the spring festivals "JARE SPRING FESTIVITIES", the summer solstice festivals "KUPALA NICHT", the harvest festivals at the end of the harvest "DOZHINKI" and the winter rituals partly transformed into the present-day form of Christmas "KOLIADA". The patterned background on the circle bears the names of the gods of Slavic mythology. The names of the four most worshipped gods "PERUN", "DAŽBOG", "SVAROG" and "VELES" exceed in size the list of local gods, which are "LADA", "MOKOSH", "YARILO", "SIMARGL", "PERPERUNA", "ZHIVA", "STRIBOR", "SVAROJITCH", "SVETOVID", "XORS", "ROD" and "MORANA".
The obverse shows the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain with the initials of the author and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "NIUE ISLANDS", the denomination and the year of issue. The rim of the coin is decorated with Slavic characters forming a continuous pattern. Four circles mark the main cardinal points. The mintmark and purity data are included.
The coin is supplied in a presentation frame and inserted on a cardboard cover, which also serves as a certificate of authenticity. The mintage is limited to 500 pieces for the whole world!
