Alexander Dubček (1921 - 1992) - one of the most important personalities of modern Slovak history, recognised at home and in the world as a democrat and a European. He was the leader of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia for less than 16 months between 1968 and 1969. His name is a symbol of the revival process and the unsuccessful attempt to establish socialism with a human face in Czechoslovakia. After a 20-year normalization-enforced "hiatus" as a "prisoner at large", he returned to domestic and European politics at the end of the Cold War. Humanity, social feeling, patriotism and democracy remained at the top of his value formula. An important milestone in his personal life was in November 1988, when one of the oldest universities in the world, the University of Bologna in Italy, awarded him the degree of Dr. h. c. This was a high tribute not only to him, but also to the entire reform and democratic movement in Czechoslovakia. When receiving his diploma, Dubček declared his commitment to the construction of a "common European house", which presented him as a politician of European dimension. He advocated a consistent platform of democratic socialism of social justice in a pluralistic civil society.
