Biblical Stories series
This exclusive silver coin issued by the Republic of Palau in 2011 from the Biblical Stories series depicts Adam and Eve on its reverse side at the Tree of Knowledge eating its fruit with a serpent in the middle (the fruit is coloured using a unique red enamel colouring technique that provides amazingly realistic colours). This is followed by the inscriptions "ADAM AND EVE" and the year of publication. The obverse shows the national emblem of the Republic of Palau, an open bible surrounded by light with the inscriptions "BIBLICAL STORIES" and the denomination.
The coin comes in a blue gift box with grey and silver trim along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1000 pieces for the entire world!
Adam and Eve
Adam and Eve were the first humans according to Genesis 1. Heb. Adam means "man", Eve (Hebrew?Chava) is a proper name, translated as Ziva. Adam and Eve are discussed in the section on the creation of the world and original sin.
Adam in this narrative is not the proper name of the first man, but a general designation. Only later did this general designation come to be used as a proper name. If we want to understand the biblical texts well, it is good to keep this in mind.
When God created man (Adam), he wanted to find a suitable helper for him, so he brought all the animals before him, but found that there was no help equal to him. So he put Adam to sleep, took out one of his ribs, and formed it into a woman. Man thus received help equal to himself.
According to the biblical narrative, God placed Adam and Eve (i.e. man and his wife) in the Garden of Eden, where they lived together with God. However, Adam and Eve committed a sin, broke God's command, and were expelled from the garden. Their transgression was that they ate from the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which was the only one they were forbidden to eat from. But it was the serpent who persuaded Eve to eat, and Eve persuaded Adam.
In Gnostic teaching, the story of original sin is usually interpreted differently. Since the creator of this world is understood to be evil, his commands are meant to imprison man and veil the truth about himself so that he cannot find it. Thus, if the serpent tells Adam and Eve that they "will be like God," then he is not inciting them to be evil, but merely revealing to them who they really are. This is why in these systems the serpent is often a symbol of secret, redemptive knowledge. Of Adam's descendants, three sons are known: Cain, Abel, and Seth.
