Alexander Rudnay (4 October 1760 - 13 September 1831) was ordained a priest in Trnava in October 1783. He served briefly as a chaplain in Častá, from 1789 he was a parish priest in Krušovka and gradually held various important positions in the church administration. The circumstances of the time were favourable for his advancement in the church hierarchy. In 1815 he was consecrated Bishop of Transylvania and in 1819 he was appointed Archbishop of Ostrich and Primate of Hungary. In 1826 Pope Leo XII appointed him cardinal (In pectore) and in 1828 the appointment was made public. In 1822, as archbishop, he began the construction of the Basilica of Esztergom. With his support, Juraj Palkovič realized the Slovak translation of the Bible. He was a supporter of the Bernolak family and the Slovak national movement. Thanks to him, dignitaries of Slovak origin came to important ecclesiastical positions in Upper Hungary. Church ceremonies and religious education in schools were conducted in the mother tongue.
