William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 - died 23 April 1616) was a major English poet and playwright, a key figure in European drama. He is usually regarded as England's national poet or bard. There are 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long epic poems and several other works attributed to him. His plays have been translated into every major language. In addition to playwriting, he was also an actor.
William Shakespeare was born and raised in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon. He was the son of John Shakespeare, a successful glover and later a Stratford town councillor, originally from Snitterfield, and Mary Arden, the daughter of a wealthy landowner. The family lived in Henley Street in Stratford. Shakespeare was born in Stratford and was baptised on 26 April 1564. His birth date is considered by some writers to be 23 April, St George's Day, as it was the custom at the time to baptise boys three days after their birth. At the age of 18, Shakespeare married 26-year-old Anne Hathaway. Permission for their marriage was granted by the Ecclesiastical Court of the Diocese of Worcester on 27 November 1582. Six months later a daughter, Susanna, was born. The next two children were twins, son Hamnet and daughter Judith, who was born less than two years later. Hamnet, however, died of unknown causes at the age of eleven, which may have marked Shakespeare's work.
Shakespeare was already an important playwright and poet during his lifetime, and was said to have been known even in Bohemia at the time. The first Czech translation (adaptation) of Shakespeare's work was made in 1786 by Karel Ignác Tham, who translated Macbeth. His works gained worldwide fame in the 18th century, also thanks to French, Italian and German translations. Even today, his dramas and comedies are very popular and are still performed all over the world.
