Detailed description
5 Oz Silver Coin - Titanic
Issued by the State of Solomon Islands in 2022, this specially shaped 5 Oz silver coin, 99.9% silver, commemorates the 110th anniversary of the tragic end of the ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic.
The shape of the coin is adapted to the reverse side design. It offers a view of the Titanic fulfilling her destiny in her collision with the iceberg. The majestic liner is depicted from the port side, facing away from the bow, with a colourful, paint-coloured iceberg towering above. The hull of the ship is executed in great detail. Individual decks with circular cabin windows, promenades and the captain's bridge are recognisable. The tops of the steamer's four funnels are coloured with coloured varnish.
Ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic, operated by the British White Star Line, sank on her maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. En route from Southampton to New York on a moonless night, it collided with an iceberg. The damage to the five watertight compartments below the submerged vessel was not foreseen by the designers, and water began to flood the hold. The rapidly rising water could not be sufficiently pumped out and keeping the Titanic afloat was impossible. The largest steamship of its time, which was thought to be unsinkable, sank into the ocean less than three hours after colliding with an iceberg. The tragedy claimed 1,517 lives among the passengers and crew. The cause of the large number of casualties was the lack of lifeboats, the poorly coordinated evacuation, the icy ocean waters, but also the blind belief that the Titanic could not sink.
The obverse of the coin specifies the location of the tragedy, complete with the inscription "TITANIC" and the coordinates of the wreck's resting place. A map of a large area of the North Atlantic Ocean shows the projected route between the continents with the location of the sinking of the vessel marked. On the right side of the coin, a compass rose incorporates Ian-Rank Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscriptions "SOLOMON ISLANDS", "ELIZABETH II", the face value "10 DOLLARS" and information on weight, issue and purity of the metal.
The coin comes in a themed box with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of 750 pieces for the whole world!
