Detailed description
5 Oz Silver Coin with Pearl - The R.M.S. Titanic - 110 years after the tragedy
This unique silver coin with a genuine mother of pearl inner core is part of the successful "Mother of Pearl" series, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2022. Minted in the purest 99.9% silver and weighing 5 Oz (155.5 g), the coin is being issued by the State of Solomon Islands for 2022 to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
The inner blue-tinted pearl set into the coin depicts on its reverse the majestic Titanic at the moment of its fateful collision with the iceberg. The atmosphere of a cold night in the middle of the ocean is emphasised by the shade of the coloured mother-of-pearl. At the top of the coin, the coordinates of the wreck's position are given as "41°43′55″ N, 49°56′45″ W". The scene partially transitions to the coin's silver rim, which bears the inscription "THE R.M.S. TITANIC" and the year of issue "2022".
The ocean liner R.M.S. Titanic, operated by the British White Star Line, sank on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. En route from Southampton to New York on a moonless night, it collided with an iceberg. The damage to the five watertight compartments below the submerged vessel was not foreseen by the designers, and water began to flood the hold. The rapidly rising water could not be sufficiently pumped out and keeping the Titanic afloat was impossible. The largest steamship of its time, which was thought to be unsinkable, sank into the ocean less than three hours after colliding with an iceberg.
The tragedy claimed 1,517 lives among the passengers and crew. The cause of the large number of casualties was the lack of lifeboats, uncoordinated evacuation, the icy waters of the ocean, but also the blind belief that the Titanic could not sink.
The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "SOLOMON ISLANDS", the face value and details of the weight and purity of the metal.
The coin comes in a deluxe gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 750 pieces for the entire world!
Mother of Pearl Series
Coins in this series go through a lengthy and sophisticated production process. The mother of pearl is extracted from the shells of the world's largest pearlfish (sea pearl) - the Pinctada Maxima, which can grow up to 30 cm in diameter. The oysters are farmed on pearl farms in perfectly isolated areas of the oceans off the coasts of Australia, Tahiti, Fiji, Indonesia and the Philippines. Their shells have a very thick inner shell made up of pearl. It takes up to 12 weeks to select the most beautiful pearl shells for the Mother of Pearl series. They are then shaped to the desired form and ultrasonic waves are used to create a motif that is worked out in minute detail. To achieve the individual colouring, the pearl is soaked in a bath with the appropriate colour for a further 5 weeks. The mother-of-pearl core is then inserted into the coin using a complicated technical process.
