Vitus Jonassen Bering five-pound coin
This exclusive silver coin, issued by the British Virgin Islands in 2011 and minted by the Pobjoy Mint in England from the purest 99.9% silver weighing a massive 5 Kg, is dedicated to the Danish seafarer and explorer Vitus J. Bering. On 13 August 1728, in the service of Tsar Peter I, Bering led an expedition that reached the easternmost point of the Chukotka Peninsula. Bering's expedition succeeded in crossing between Asia and America, proving that the continents were not connected.
The reverse of the coin shows Bering's ship between Russia and America. The coin also incorporates a working marine thermometer and compass. The inscriptions "500 DOLLARS", "1681-1741 "and "VITUS J. BERING" follow. The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS", "QUEEN ELIZABETH II" and the year of issue.
The coin comes in a luxury lacquered mahogany box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a very limited edition of only 350 pieces for the whole world!
