Urban Hunters - Falcon
The silver coloured coin issued by the Republic of Benin for 2022 and minted from the purest 99.9% silver weighing 93.3 g (3 Oz) in Antique Standard is part of the Urban Hunters series, which will gradually introduce the representatives of urban hunters. A falcon was chosen for the opening coin of the series.
The reverse side of the coin depicts the falcon in a cityscape dominated by the Gothic cathedral. The bird of prey stands out from the image thanks to its high relief. The overall scene is enlivened by a colour print for the sky blue sky. The motif is complemented by the name of the coin "FALCON", the name of the Belgian manufacturer P. De Greef and the mark of the designer.
The falcon is a medium-sized bird of prey and, with few exceptions, widespread throughout the world. For nesting it seeks open country in lowland and mountain areas. It hunts exclusively in flight other birds up to the size of a duck. It swoops down on its prey and attacks with its talons. Its hunting technique, which allows it to reach speeds of up to 390 km/h, does not allow it to safely attack entire flocks, so small birds often cluster together in defence.
In the Czech Republic, the peregrine falcon also lives in cities, where it hunts overpopulated pigeons. One pair of peregrine falcons nest in the tower of the Týn Cathedral in Prague, and another pair has found refuge in the tower of St. Bartholomew's Church in Pilsen.
The obverse of the coin bears the national emblem of Benin with the inscription 'RÉPUBLIQUE DU BÉNIN', the year of issue '2022', the face value '1500 FRANCS CFA' and the weight and purity of the metal.
The coin is presented in a presentation box with a colour illustration, which is also a numbered certificate of authenticity. The mintage is limited to 750 pieces for the whole world!
