Series "Masterpieces of Art" - Rembrandt - Night Watch
Exclusive silver coloured coin with 17 Swarovski crystals, issued by the State of Cook Islands in the "Masterpieces of Art" series and precision minted by the German mint B.H. Mayer in 2009, weighing 3 Oz (93.3 g) in top quality proof, is dedicated to one of the best painters and printmakers of Western art - Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn and his famous painting - The Night Watch (the original title of this painting is The Crew of Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch).
The coin shows on its reverse a coloured replica of Rembrandt - Night Watch framed by 17 crystals. Rembrandt completed this masterpiece in 1642. The painting depicts a military garrison led by Captain Frans Banning Cocq and his lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch. The three most striking elements of the painting are the two officers in the foreground and the little girl to the left of them. Behind her, flag bearer Jan Visscher Cornelissen carries the garrison flag. The dead chicken, which the girl has attached to her garment with a belt, symbolizes the defeated enemy, and its claw is a symbol of the soldiers fighting the arquebus. Similarly, the yellow colour of her dress symbolises victory. The man in front of her wears an oak leaf on his helmet, a traditional motif of soldiers fighting the arquebus. The commonly known title Night Watch was created under the mistaken impression that the painting depicts a night scene. This impression was caused by the dark paint that was applied to the painting afterwards. In reality, the painting called Night Watch depicts a scene in broad daylight. The inscriptions 'MASTERPIECES OF ART', 'REMBRANDT VAN RIJN' and the year of publication follow.
The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley, along with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and the denomination.
The coin comes in a light-coloured wooden box with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 1,642 pieces for the whole world!
