Detailed description
Karel Škréta
Karel Škréta Šotnovský of Závořice (1610 - 1674) is one of the most important Czech painters of the Baroque period. He was born near the Týn Cathedral in Prague in the house U Černého jelena into the family of a royal official. The reigning status of the Šotnov family from Závořice dates back to 1570, when his grandfather received the family coat of arms from Emperor Maximilian II.
Charles was still a young boy when his father died. His upbringing was entrusted to his uncle Pavel Škrét, who was the mintmaster of Kutná Hora. He provided the boy with a humanistic education at the Týn School. He knew Latin, German, Italian and French. He used his language skills during the years of emigration, where the Protestant family left after the Battle of White Mountain.
He stayed briefly in Freiberg, Saxony, and then went to Italy. It was his experiences in Italy that shaped the talent of the budding painter and influenced his style. After Venice, Bologna and Florence, he settled for a year in Rome, where he became a member of the Schilderbent painters' association. The turbulent association, run by the Dutch and the Flemings, provided a primarily intellectual base for artists working in Rome.
In 1638, after converting to Catholicism, he returned to Prague and recovered the confiscated family property. He set up his own workshop in the Orufný trh (Fruit Market) in Dom u Hájků and soon became a prize-winning painter of portraits and sacred paintings. He portrayed the nobles, artists and intellectuals of his time, often stylising them according to their personalities. He created altarpieces for the Týn Cathedral and the Church of St. Procopius, a painting for the Church of St. Martin in the Wall, and a thematic painting for the Prague hospital of the Vlach Congregation.
Karel Škréta died on 30 July 1674 and his body is buried in the Church of St. Havel in Prague's Old Town.
