Detailed description

Establishment of the Czech savings bank Böhmische Sparkasse

The European trend of establishing savings banks began in Germany and Switzerland in the second half of the 18th century. From there it spread to Britain and in 1819 to the countries under the Austrian monarchy.

The idea of the first savings bank in the Czech lands was the brainchild of Josef von Hoch, a councillor of the Provincial Administrative Office in Prague. It was intended to serve mainly the poorer population for saving with the certainty of a small appreciation.
A sufficient basic fund of at least 12,000 zlotys was a prerequisite for the establishment of the savings bank. The required amount was to provide a guarantee for the savers. The call for capital was first published in a newspaper in 1923. Businessmen, industrialists and many members of noble families responded. The first contributor was Rudolf Colloredo-Mansfeld, who was followed by August Lobkowitz, John Adolf II, John Adolphus II and John Paul II. Schwarzenberg and others. Even members of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty contributed. The highest amount of 2,000 gold pieces was donated by Emperor Franz I.

It was on the Emperor's birthday, 12 February 1825, that the "Saving Treasury for the Capital City of Prague and for Bohemia" was founded. The too long official name was gradually replaced by the shorter version Böhmische Sparkasse (Savings Bank of Bohemia). In the early days, it was open only three days a week in the premises of the Provincial Diet building. Savers were allowed to deposit from 25 krejcars to 100 gold pieces. A deposit book in the name of the bank was used to record deposits and interest credited. In the first year of operation, the deposits amounted to 124 000 guilders; ten years later, they amounted to 8 087 000 guilders.

Each silver coin is stored in a protective plastic capsule and placed in a dark blue box along with a certificate of authenticity from the CNB.
