Detailed description

Finding of a sculpture of a woman in Dolní Věstonice, the so-called Venus of Věstonice

A small female statue made of baked clay in the period 29 000 - 25 000 BC is the third oldest known depiction of a human figure in the world. It is also the earliest evidence of pottery production in the Paleolithic period.

The discovery was made on 13 July 1925 during an archaeological excavation between Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov Members of the team of archaeologist Karel Absolon also found a statuette broken in two among stone tools and animal bones in the ash pit of a prehistoric settlement. Almost immediately, it was clear that a world unique had been discovered. The figurine measures 11.5 cm in height and 4.3 cm at the sides. It represents a naked woman with sagging breasts, wide hips and fat pads on her back. The face is executed in a very simplified manner, with two grooves representing the eyes. It has very aesthetic proportions compared to other Paleolithic finds.

The figurine has been subjected to many examinations using newly available technologies. It is known to have been made from splinter directly from the site of the find. In addition to sediment, it also contains other impurities and possibly fragments of mammoth bone. The non-compactness of the mass caused cracks and cavities inside the figurine during firing, which threaten its condition. Analysis of the four punctures on the top of the head is currently underway in an attempt to confirm Karl Absolon's hypothesis that the head of Venus was decorated with bird feathers.

The Venus of Věstonice is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic and is permanently stored in a safe in an undisclosed location. The original is only exhibited on special occasions. In 2004, American art dealers set its price at $40 million.

Each silver coin is stored in a protective plastic capsule and placed in a dark blue box along with a certificate of authenticity from the CNB.
