Institutions of the Czech Republic - Supreme Court
The Supreme Court, with its seat in Brno, was established by Czechoslovak law on 2 November 1918. In accordance with the law, it is the supreme judicial authority for civil and criminal proceedings, except for matters that fall under the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Administrative Court.
The Supreme Court hears appeals and complaints for breach of the law, determines local jurisdiction, recognises foreign decisions, authorises the transit of persons on the basis of European arrest warrants and reviews interception orders.
An important function of the Supreme Court is also the unification of Czech case law through appeal procedures. Important decisions and opinions are published in the Collection of Judicial Decisions and Opinions of the Supreme Court.
Since September 2017, the Supreme Court also collects and monitors notifications on the activities, assets and income of Czech judges, which are not public.
